Kenyans have been urged not to believe misinformation spreading online that activist Boniface Mwangi has been abducted again and is being transferred to Tanzania.

In a statement, LSK President Faith Odhiambo identified a doctored news quote from a local media outlet and urged Kenyans to be wary of fake news.

“Our attention has been drawn to a series of false statements and deepfakes allegedly concerning the abduction of Boniface Mwangi,” she stated.

“We urge members of the public to disregard this fake online campaign and disregard all attempts at misdirection and misinformation.”

Amnesty International Kenya Executive Director Irungu Houghton also urged Kenyans to dismiss these stories, citing another supposed quote purporting to come from another popular media outlet.

In his statement, Houghton urged Kenyans to dismiss similar claims that the activist had been rearrested.

He stated that the phony posts were motivated by the demands for justice of software developer Rose Njeri and activists Boniface Mwangi and Agatha Atuhaire, who were allegedly tortured in Tanzania.

“Disinformation Alert. KOX (Kenyans on X), be advised that the haters have been busy overnight. Our call for #FreeRoseNjeri and #JusticeForBonifaceAgather has touched a nerve,” he stated while flagging the post as fake,” he stated.

Over the last two weeks, Kenyan activists have led a campaign against the incarceration and torture of Mwangi and Uganda’s Atuhaire in Tanzania.

They had traveled to East Africa to support opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who faced treason accusations in open court on May 19.

Mwangi and Atuhaire, who had managed to enter Tanzania, went missing for over three days after reporting that they were being chased by Tanzanian police.
