‘He Was Not Arrested, But Voluntarily Surrendered!’ – Central OCS Talaam’s Family Says

The family of Nairobi Central Police Station OCS Samson Talam has strenuously denied claims that he was caught while escaping the authorities.

In an official statement to newsrooms, the family stressed that contrary to popular belief, Talam was not on the run at the time of his arrest.

It stated that Eldoret, where he was purportedly “nabbed,” is his known and official domicile.

“OCS Taalam voluntarily surrendered himself to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), demonstrating full cooperation with the ongoing process,” said Tony Koskei, a family member.

The family stated that he was received in good condition by authorities and is now in lawful custody while investigations proceed.

It encouraged the public and media to desist from propagating false information, stating that “factual reporting is essential to ensure justice and due process are upheld”.

“Let the truth guide public discourse. We urge media outlets and individuals to verify facts before spreading harmful misinformation,” Koskei stated.

Talam’s surrender comes following reports that Albert Ojwang died in detention.

He is being held at a police station in Nairobi and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

The family also denied reports that he turned off his mobile phone to avoid arrest.

“He was receiving several phone calls and remained accessible throughout. At no point did he go into hiding or attempt to avoid communication with investigators or colleagues,” Koskei added.

“If at any moment his phone was off, it was only to avoid numerous calls from people inquiring about the incident.”

Taalam is alleged to have been off duty on Saturday night when Albert Ojwang, who later died in detention in mysterious circumstances, was brought in.

Ojwang had been arrested at his residence in Homa Bay on charges of spreading fake information.

Three additional officers are being held in connection with the incident.

A total of 23 people—including 17 police officers and six civilians—have been questioned as suspects or witnesses.

Among them is a technician who installed the station’s CCTV system.

He acknowledged receiving Sh3,000 to erase and format footage from the night Ojwang died.

Meanwhile, Ipoa was given permission to keep Constable James Mukhwana for seven days while investigations continued.

In records submitted at the Milimani Law Courts, Ipoa indicated that preliminary findings implicate Mukhwana and other officers who have yet to be detained in the fatal assault.

They also accused the cops of taking part in a coordinated cover-up.

IPOA argued against Mukhwana’s release, noting the likelihood of witness interference and evidence tampering, particularly key custody records.
