Angry Youth Storm Police Station, Burn It Down While Carrying Ojwang’s Coffin
Homa Bay youths carrying Albert Ojwang’s body rushed to the Mawego Police Station, where he was initially booked following his arrest on June 7, and set it on fire.
In a video published online, a large crowd was seen running while a few people at the front hoisted the coffin, which had just arrived in Homa Bay from Nairobi.

Running and singing dirges, the youths marched to the Mawego Police Station, where he was temporarily detained before being taken to the Nairobi Central Police Station.
According to reports, the activity was conducted to ward off malevolent spirits who might disrupt his peace.
However, the scene quickly became violent, with mourners turning into demonstrators and setting fire to areas of the police station.
This comes a day after his family held a requiem ceremony for him on Wednesday, July 2, at Nairobi’s Ridgeways Baptist Church, where they described him as unproblematic and taken far too soon.

Albert’s mother, Eucabeth Ojwang, described her son’s cheerful and dramatic final moments.
Ojwang’s transfer from Homa Bay to Nairobi had been scrutinized, with some legal experts disputing the constitutionality of the move.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale wanted to view the court order, to which Amin explained why it was unnecessary.

On June 11, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) chairman, Mohammed Amin, appeared before the Senate.
“We do not require a court order to move a suspect from one police jurisdiction to another police jurisdiction,” he stated.
“The deceased was booked in and later booked out of Mawego Police Station at 1600 hours and booked into Central Police Station at 2132 hours.”
Ojwang’s death escalated to a point where the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat, stepped aside following public uproar calling for his resignation.
