Kawira Mwangaza Appointed Party Leader After UDA Exit
Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been named the new head of the Umoja na Maendeleo party.
The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) reported the latest development in a gazette notice, announcing that Mwangaza would succeed Charles Wambora Mugambi.
Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu advised anyone who objected to Mwangaza being the new party leader seven days to submit written complaints to her office.
“Any person with written submissions concerning the intended changes by the political party shall, within seven (7) days from the date of this publication, make their written submissions to the Registrar of Political Parties,” Nderitu stated.

Mwangaza’s new post comes three months after she announced her intention to leave the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the party she joined after becoming Meru governor in the 2022 elections.
She was elected to the gubernatorial seat on an independent ticket, but later joined the UDA.
However, just a few years into her term, Mwangaza was impeached, blaming President William Ruto’s UDA of abandoning her during her removal.
Her husband, Murega Baichu, has claimed that the UDA was pressing for Mwangaza’s impeachment behind the scenes, despite his wife’s party commitment.
However, Baichu disclosed that the UDA only attempted to defend Mwangaza while Cleophas Malala was Secretary-General.
Malala wrote to the local government, imploring Members of the local Assembly to halt the procedure.
In addition, the former First Gentleman had stated that Mwangaza would soon disclose her new political outfit, which she would utilize to run for political office in the impending 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, further changes in the party revealed that Mwangaza would be deputized by Victor Koome Mwangaza, who will succeed Haron Shamala Ipalasa.
