“In a well-coordinated operation, Meru law enforcement officers have apprehended three suspects behind the arson attack on Magunas Supermarket on July 7, 2025,” reads part of the police report.
“The suspects, (name withheld), were captured on CCTV cameras looting and setting fire to Magunas Supermarket as well as breaking into and stealing from Seven Eleven Lounge and Selelite Supermarket.”
As part of the operation, authorities seized a dark green motorcycle with the registration number KMGN 839F, which they think was used in the attacks.
The bike is currently being retained as evidence in the continuing investigations.
The suspects are currently in jail and being processed as police prepare to present them in court.
Investigators have assured the public that efforts to locate and arrest other persons engaged in the attacks are ongoing.
Law enforcement has underlined its commitment to restore order and punishing any culprits responsible for property destruction and looting during the rally.
During the Saba Saba Day protests, thugs concentrated in the Makutano district of Meru.
On Meru Magunas fire, I got a video of the locals claiming a foul, wondering, and shouting why the police are reluctant and watching. It was recorded about 40 meters from the supermarket. The people's concern is very audible.

Here are the perpetrators of the Magunas Supermarket fire. The fire was started at the small makeshift luggage bay but you can see police in uniform breaking glass panes so that the fire could access the main building. Then after they are successful they leave casually. pic.twitter.com/Sz1T6pyGWR

This resulted in frustrating attempts by vital service providers to restore normalcy.
Notably, demonstrators assaulted a Meru County government fire truck with stones after it ran out of water while attempting to contain the grocery fire.

During the melee, a Kenya Red Cross vehicle that was stationed in Makutano to provide first aid to injured civilians was also vandalised.
The Magunas episode was likely the worst example of a business raid during the Saba Saba Day protests, however, similar events were reported in other counties.
Protesters battered the display glass with stones at the Nice Supermarket in Kirinyaga, leaving the proprietors counting damages.
A similar event occurred in Nakuru County, where demonstrators broke into a grocery, probably with the purpose of stealing, but police arrived on time.
