Kenyan Police To Wear Bodycams During Protests – Mudavadi
The administration has renewed plans to acquire and equip police officers with body cameras, this time with an emphasis on their usage during public protests.
In an interview with TV47, Prime Cabinet Secretary (PCS) Musalia Mudavadi stated that body cameras would assist in ensuring accountability and transparency in how security officers manage demonstrators.
Mudavadi stated that recent protests, which have been plagued by allegations of excessive action by police, have highlighted the importance of clear and fair documentation of events on the ground.
“The intention is to equip police with body cameras to identify the real provocateurs in demonstrations,” Mudavadi said.
“This will provide clarity on who instigates violence – whether it is the protesters or officers.”

He noted that, while the cameras would be a helpful tool in combating both misuse and misinformation, the purchase would necessitate a large expenditure and a thorough budgetary process.
“This initiative needs to be systematic and properly funded. It is not just about buying equipment but ensuring it is integrated into a broader accountability framework,” he stated.
Mudavadi also defended the police, claiming that the government has continuously dedicated resources to ensure their professional development.

He also urged officers to maintain professionalism in the performance of their jobs.
He also blasted unnamed individuals, accusing them of seeking to blackmail the President by organizing an illegitimate change of leadership.

“There are people who have attempted, and they continue to attempt, to engineer unconstitutional processes of trying to get to power,” Mudavadi stated.
Meanwhile, the Prime Cabinet Secretary echoed ODM leader Raila Odinga’s call for a national conversation to address the country’s serious concerns.
“The solution is this: if we do not talk to each other, we will graduate to talking at each other, and then from talking at each other to fighting with each other. So the logical thing is to have dialogue,” he noted.
Mudavadi asked stakeholders to engage in a constructive debate over the structure and manner of the proposed talks, stating that the alternative would be considerably more painful and undesired.
