School Closed Indefinitely Following Student Protest Over Exams
St. Patrick’s Iten Boys High School in Elgeyo Marakwet County has been closed indefinitely following a violent protest that resulted in the destruction of school property.
The turmoil began when students apparently refused to sit for this term’s exams, causing the administration to send all students home as a precaution.
Alice Sitienei, the Director of Education for Keiyo North Sub-County, confirmed the incident, saying the pupils went on a rampage.
They vandalized property on the school grounds in protest of the upcoming exams.
According to reports, the principal has been accused by students and other stakeholders of failing to uphold academic achievement requirements.
The stakeholders believed that this led to the school’s low performance.
Classrooms and other structures at the school, which is located around 500 metres from Iten Township and 32 kilometers from Eldoret along the Iten-Kapsowar Road, were damaged, according to images published online.

St. Patrick’s Iten Boys High School, known for its high academic performance and strong athletic legacy, has long been regarded as one of Kenya’s best national schools.
The college has produced a number of notable individuals, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
The developments follow the disruption of studies in several Kenyan institutions due to disturbance, which included the torching of dormitories and classrooms.
On May 12, this year, Bukhalalire High School in Busia County was closed indefinitely due to a dormitory fire that left at least six students critically injured.

Butula Sub-County Director of Education, John Kemei, ordered the institution’s indefinite closure to allow for investigations.
Last month, St. Mary’s Ukwala High School in Siaya County was also closed indefinitely when students went on a rampage over allegations of poor quality maize flour used to make ugali.
The students went on strike to protest the school administration’s inability to listen to their concerns.
The students shattered classroom and office windows before staging a walkout to the adjacent Ukwala center to show their dissatisfaction with the education offices.
