Outspoken UDA Senator Mocks Maraga Over Fundraising For The 2027 Bid

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has slammed former Chief Justice David Maraga’s plan to build a campaign website urging Kenyans to give money and volunteer for his 2027 presidential candidacy.

Cherargei criticized Maraga’s approach to fundraising from Kenyans, pointing out that it was not how politics in Kenya operated.

In a statement posted on his X page, Cherargei referenced his previous advice to his Busia counterpart, Okiya Omtatah, who is also running for the top seat.

Cherargei informed Omtatah of the minimal amount required to fund a presidential campaign.

“Just like I advised my brother Senator Omtatah that to run an effective Presidential campaign, you need at least seven billion shillings,” Cherargei stated.

“Rtd. Chief Justice Maraga should know that in Kenya, a fundraiser can never fund campaigns even of a Member of the County Assembly!” he added.

The Senator, a staunch ally of President William Ruto, appeared to ignore the practice of politicians soliciting money from Kenyans to fund their political activities.

He mentioned Morara Kebaso’s inability to raise funds to fuel his vehicle.

He also questioned Maraga’s genuine motivation for soliciting financial help, after previously disclosing that he lacked the financial resources to campaign and would rely on well-wishers.

“If Morara Kebaso was fundraising for fuel only, yet he could not manage. Is Maraga looking for votes or money? Which is which?” he quipped.

Maraga established his campaign website on Friday, July 18, inviting Kenyans from home and abroad to contribute to his campaign.

Contributions ranged from Ksh100 to Ksh50,000, with the possibility to specify a bespoke sum.

Contributions from the diaspora ranged from five dollars (Ksh647) to twenty-five dollars (Ksh3,237), with a custom amount option available.

The former CJ had stated that he would provide a little sum of between one and two million shillings to the campaign.

Aside from giving, Kenyans were encouraged to donate their time or join the movement by contributing ideas.

Maraga officially confirmed his presidential candidacy on Wednesday, June 18, citing combating corruption and police brutality as his key priorities.
