Gov’t Announces Fresh Plans For JKIA, Wilson Airport Expansion

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has requested public opinion on the impending future development plan of Wilson Airport and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In a notice issued on Sunday, July 20, the authority stated that it will perform a Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) to analyze the environmental and social implications that the development of the two airports, which it did not name, may have.

According to the administration, the evaluation will be carried out by two consultancy firms: Dar Al Handasah Consultants and Geodev (K) Ltd, in accordance with the rules of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act of 1999.

According to KAA, the future development of the two vital transport infrastructures is critical to strengthening the economy and improving service delivery.

“The SESA process requires broad stakeholder engagement, involving neighboring communities, organizations, and individuals who may be affected by, or have an interest in, the planning and future operations of the two airports,” KAA stated.

“The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is developing the Integrated Master Plans for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport (WAP) to guide future developments and enhance service delivery,” it added.

According to the government, public engagement in Wilson Airport’s next plans will take place on Monday, July 21, 23, and 28, in Nairobi West, South C, and Langata Mugumoini.

The JKIA, on the other hand, will have its exercise at Syokimau, Embakasi, and Utawala on July 22, 24 and 25.

During the exercises, residents in these areas will be educated about the master plans to expand the two facilities, as well as given the opportunity to offer their thoughts, opinions, and concerns.

“Your participation will help shape the future of these airports and ensure that community issues are well understood and taken into account. Your participation and engagement will be highly appreciated,” KAA stated.

The revelation comes just days after the authority stated that it is working to improve JKIA’s infrastructure, which includes runways, airside access roads, and the baggage handling system.

KAA Board Chairman Caleb Kositany stated during a meeting with top officials from ground handling agents (GHAs) on Wednesday, July 9, that the airport’s rehabilitation and improvement will be crucial in elevating operations.

The Key improvements aim to develop the airport into a modern facility that can compete on a worldwide scale.
