NCIC Fires Vice Chair Over Close Relationship With Gachagua

Wambui Nyutu has been removed as Vice Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) for alleged continued involvement in partisan political activities.

NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia confirmed Nyutu’s expulsion on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, following a Special Commission Meeting to discuss her actions.

According to Kobia, Nyutu broke both her oath of office and the law by associating with political persons despite her position.

“The Commission unanimously resolved to relieve Ms. Nyutu of her role as Vice Chairperson of the Commission with immediate effect,” Kobia said in a statement.

The NCIC had called three previous sessions to discuss the outgoing vice chair’s conduct, indicating that Nyutu would face problems earlier this year.

The sessions were called because Nyutu made public remarks about her political ties, which the NCIC deemed politically partisan.

The commission also revealed that Nyutu originally apologized and vowed to withdraw from any political action. This vow, however, appears to have been violated over time.

“At its meeting on 22nd July, 2025, the Commission noted with deep concern that Ms. Wambui Nyutu has since been involved in partisan political activities, including participation in meetings affiliated with a particular political party,” Kobia said in the meeting.

Following the meeting on Tuesday, the NCIC voted to begin the process of removing her as the commission’s vice chair.

This will be accomplished by invoking Section 23 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (CAP 7N), which allows for the removal of a commissioner when misconduct is demonstrated or there are legal infractions.

While no particular examples of Nyutu’s infractions were revealed, the removed vice chair did meet with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on multiple occasions.

During a church service in May 2025, Nyutu stated that Gachagua was one of the country’s best leaders.

Prior to that, in November 2024, Nyutu met with the former DP at his mansion, where she was referred to as a ‘daughter of the mountain’.

Meanwhile, in a fast transition from Nyutu’s tenure, the commission chose Dorcas Kedogo to succeed her, effective immediately.
