DCP’s Irungu Nyakera Explains Why Gachagua Focuses On Mt Kenya

Irungu Nyakera, a patron of the Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP) in Nairobi, has defended party head Rigathi Gachagua’s regular political engagements on Mount Kenya.

Nyakera explained why the former DP avoided other regions.

Nyakera stated in an interview with Radio Citizen that the move was simply strategic because Gachagua was a member of an opposition group that included leaders from other regions of Kenya.

Nyakera explained that political leaders frequently focus on areas where they have the most support in the run-up to an election.

“At the end of the day, everyone who is part of the opposition has their strongholds,” Nyakera said.

“For now, the focus is on those strongholds, but every section of this country will be part of the line-up in the government.”

Gachagua is a significant player in the opposition, along with Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa.

Despite links with leaders from around the country, the former DP has frequently focused his campaigns on Mount Kenya.

According to Nyakera, this was a deliberate attempt to gain support from his base before engaging nationally.

When asked if Gachagua was a viable presidential candidate, Nyakera insisted that all key opposition leaders, including the former DP, were eligible because his impeachment case was still pending in court.

He went on, “The impeachment is ineligible until court processes are exhausted. So until Gachagua is told he does not have any other option, everyone in coalition can vie for the presidency.”

Nyakera was also asked to resolve potential squabbles that could occur as a group of leaders intent on deposing President William Ruto all coveted the top job.

He emphasized that, notwithstanding all leaders’ political ambitions, the primary goal remained the removal of the Kenya Kwanza administration from power.

“The agenda is wantam. All these leaders live in Kenya, and they know that if there are any divisions, the Wantam agenda will not succeed,” he stated.

“All the leaders can say they want to vie, but at the end of the day, the agenda remains Wantam”.

Gachagua is currently out of the country on a two-month tour of the United States.

After two failed attempts, he is expected to officially launch his DCP party in September, when he returns to the country.
