5 Police Officers Face Prison Time For Skipping Testimony Case
Five police officers were sentenced to three months in prison or a Ksh10,000 fine each for failing to appear in court to testify against police officer Ahmed Rashid, who was involved in the deadly shooting.
The sentence was imposed at a hearing in Kibera’s High Court, where a Pangani police officer is accused of fatally shooting two young men in Eastleigh in 2017.
Only one of the six police officers scheduled to testify appeared, while the other five opted out.
Prosecutor Christine Timoi informed the court that one of the five had come to the courthouse before the hearings began, telling her that his colleagues had declined to testify and then vanished.

During the hearings, video footage obtained from the National Police Service’s (NPS) Integrated Communication, Command, and Control Center (IC3) was shown to the court.
In March 2017, a video showing the defendant shooting the two victims, Jamal Mohamed and Mohamed Dahir Kheri, went viral, causing public outrage.

What followed was a lengthy legal process compounded by the fact that the two victims were suspected members of an Eastleigh gang that had been terrorizing neighbors.
Eastleigh residents and business owners pleaded with the authorities to show pity on Rashid, describing him as a public servant dedicated to maintaining the area’s security.
“Before Ahmed Rashid was deployed to this area, Eastleigh was uninhabitable,” the secretary of the Eastleigh Business District Association said in November 2022.

“People have forgotten about ‘Super Power’ (gang); they thrived in Eastleigh, and because of Ahmed Rashid, they are no longer here.”
However, the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) determined that the deaths were caused by police activity and recommended murder charges.
Rashid was charged with two charges of murder on April 17, 2023, after a medical assessment determined that he was fit to stand trial.
He pleaded not guilty to the accusations and was given Ksh200,000 bail as the case progressed.
