Raila Urges Nyanza Residents To Consolidate Lands Into Plots
Raila Odinga, the head of the ODM, has urged households in the Nyanza region to consolidate their land plots in order to maximize productivity.
Odinga asked Luo elders to organize the community to end the practice of creating scattered homesteads for the sons of a family patriarch.
He stated that the traditional practice denies the Luo community land for development projects.
Odinga, speaking at a fundraiser at Wang’ Adonji SDA Church in Karachuonyo Constituency, which was sponsored by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, stated that land had become scarce.
“What I have experienced is that there is a big disparity in availability of land between today and those days when we were young,” Raila stated.
“In those days, land was very vast and that is why parents had no problems allocating land to their sons to construct homesteads.”
He stated that as the population has grown, land has become limited, making it difficult to allot land to all of his sons for homesteads while still retaining enough for agriculture.
Odinga proposed that the community adopt an urban-style setup in which members of a specific family build residential dwellings centrally on a designated plot of land.
The land where they should have built distributed homesteads should be preserved for agriculture and other development activities.
He maintained that such communities had previously worked effectively in developed countries and would make it easier for the government to supply facilities such as water, power, roads, and health centers.

He urged Luo elders to begin advocating the urbanization agenda throughout the community.
“Urbanisation is the only way to go. Let our elders start promoting the agenda in the community,” Odinga said.
He also advised the community to focus on development-oriented politics. Wanga asked residents to continue strengthening the ODM party.
Governor Gladys Wanga to Senator Sifuna: At no point have we withdrawn from the MoU with the broad-based government. Raila Odinga has never directed us to exit the agreement. So, if you speak against the broad-based government, you're not speaking on behalf of ODM party. pic.twitter.com/DQj1QKrByG

“Let all officials of ODM work hard in strengthening the party in their jurisdictions,” Wanga said.
