CS Mbadi Warns ODM Party Against Demonstration Calls

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has warned members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) against organizing protests, warning that such actions will drag the party down.

Speaking in an interview with Ramogi TV on Wednesday morning, Mbadi warned that such activities risk reopening old political scars from the fight for justice.

He asked party members to reconsider the party’s fundamental mission, stating that ODM, like any other political party, was founded to provide hope to its people.

“I want to warn ODM members that demonstrations alone are not the solution. Things can easily be resolved if people sit down and address their differences,” Mbadi said.

He added, “I urge my fellow ODM members to think carefully and know what they really want from the start. The only reason people follow political parties is because of hope.”

While Kenyans have previously turned to the streets when the government failed to address some of their grievances, the CS stressed that protests alone will not solve Kenya’s problems.

He underlined that diplomacy and national conversation, as proposed by the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga before his death, were the most effective problem-solving strategies.

Mbadi, in particular, raised concern about some politicians, most of whom were from the Nyanza region, and advocated for mass action rather than a deliberate approach to addressing their problem.

“In politics, you must be a strategist. ODM has immense support in most parts of the country,” Mbadi revealed.

“If you look keenly at those who want people to protest, they are not from other communities but our own community.”

Mbadi’s statements come amid suspicion that the party is divided over its decision to collaborate with President William Ruto’s administration.

This comes just four days after Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino promised to lead nationwide rallies against the rising cost of living.

Speaking at the ODM party’s 20th anniversary celebrations on Saturday, November 15, the lawmaker warned that soaring education and commodity costs could drive Kenyans to the streets.

During the same event, Siaya Governor James Orengo criticized President Ruto’s administration, claiming that Kenyans were ready to return to the streets due to poor governance.

“If ODM is strong and stands on the basis that Raila wanted a free country, we must fight everywhere,” Orengo said.

“If you are afraid, do not sell us fear; we are prepared to go back to the streets. I, as James Orengo, am prepared to go back to the streets.”
