MALAVA: Seth Panyako Claims Assassination Plot In Night Raid

Malava Constituency Seth Panyako, a parliamentary candidate, has claimed that an attempt was made on his life just hours before the November 27 by-election.

The DAP-K candidate was speaking on Thursday morning, November 27, shortly after voting.

He claimed that his driver had suffered serious injuries as a result of an attack on Wednesday night by people he believes were government-sponsored.

Panyako claims that numerous state-allied individuals, including a high-ranking advisor to the president, were behind the attack, which also allegedly targeted his family.

“The government machinery, together with criminals, attacked my hotel, and the aim of the attack was to assassinate my wife and me,” Panyako claimed.

The DAP-K candidate further alleged that he was especially targeted since pre-election surveys indicated he was the overwhelming favourite to win the Malava seat at the cost of UDA’s David Ndakwa.

“The government candidate was only doing 24 per cent yesterday,” he went on.

“So the only option that is there for the government candidate to win this election is to assassinate me. They have no way of winning this election.”

Panyako believes he was targeted because the hotel room he and his wife were sleeping in was separate from the main suite, but the intruders proceeded straight to his room.

Panyako voted at St Joseph Lunyu Primary, and cameras captured the contender in tears moments later.

It has subsequently been confirmed that his driver, who was allegedly stabbed the night before, is receiving treatment at Webuye Hospital.

Aside from the alleged stabbing, an individual was injured on Wednesday evening after being attacked by angry residents who claimed he was in the area to bribe voters.

It is unknown which candidate the individual favoured during the bribery spree.

Eugene Wamalwa, the leader of the DAP-K party, has since stepped in on the Malava polls controversy, calling for the dismissal of UDA candidate Ndakwa.

“We want to tell the IG of police that police are being used as a tool of violence and are working with goons,” Wamalwa said.

“We want to tell the IEBC that this UDA candidate should be disqualified for going to the extent of wanting to harm his opponent.”

Malava is one of the constituencies considered a battleground between the UDA and the opposition, and tensions have also been reported in Mbeere North and Magarini in Kilifi County.
