“Proceeds Of Bribery!” – Martha Karua Speaks On By-Elections, Questions Kenyan Voters

Martha Karua has questioned Kenyan voters’ choices, asking whether they preferred performance-oriented leaders with long-term rewards or those chosen on the basis of bribery, which run out as soon as the election is over.

During a news event on November 29, Karua resignedly asked why Kenyans choose leaders who engaged in electoral misconduct over those who claimed to deliver change.

The High Court advocate urged voters to choose justice over bribes, which gave temporary respite while maintaining systemic inequities like underfunded and inadequate healthcare.

“While voters will enjoy sleeping on the mattress (proceeds of bribery), they will experience pain and even loss when they, or their family, visit an underfunded and ineffective health facility,” Karua warned.

In short, Karua joked that she had never witnessed an election where voters were bought with mattresses.

Karua’s statement follows a viral video showing Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda, who supports UDA candidate David Ndakwa, distributing beds, blankets, and cash to several elderly women in Malava Constituency.

An election in which Ndakwa triumphed.

“Say no to politically-induced election violence,” she continued. “Despite a heavy police presence in various polling stations, we witnessed vehicles set ablaze, open assault on innocent voters, and voter bribery.”

The United Opposition Principal went on to urge all Kenyans to learn from the events in Malava, Mbeere North, and other by-election-contested areas.

Karua recommended voters to take the proceeds of voter bribery if necessary, but to refrain from making any jokes on election day.

“Election day is a day to fight for your future,” she insisted.

Karua announced that the United Opposition would work together to analyze the events leading up to and during the by-election before making any decisions about the next steps.

Hinting at the possibility of involving the courts in resolving the electoral malpractices witnessed, Karua reminded Kenyans that the constitution states that power belongs to the people and not those in powerful elected positions.

The iron lady concluded by stating that, regardless of all, the Ruto administration will only serve for one term.
