REVEALED: How Standard Group Fired Its Senior Editor While Battling Cancer
Kizito Namulanda, a former Standard Group journalist who worked there for 15 years, has spoken out about how he was fired while undergoing cancer treatment.
His issues began in February 2022, when a doctor observed his continuous hoarseness and advised him to see a throat specialist. He was eventually diagnosed with throat cancer.
Namulanda described the diagnosis as terrible, and with a young boy at home, he struggled to envision what the future would hold.
Conducting online searches just exacerbated his dread, as they revealed sad statistics, particularly for late-stage throat cancer.
According to him, further testing verified the severity of his disease, pushing him to seek treatment in India, where physicians ordered a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
He said that the continuous treatments and pills depleted him, claiming that his weight dropped dramatically from 74kg to 40kg since radiotherapy made eating food difficult and he lost his appetite.

When he returned to Kenya, he decided to go into isolation owing to his compromised immunity, and as Coronavirus disease cases increased, experts warned that even a moderate infection may be dangerous.
“Before I travelled back, the government had issued Covid-19 spike alerts, so we had to be careful,” Namulanda said.
“The doctors had warned that my immune system was still very weak and could not fight infections.”
After several months of solitude, he decided to return to India for his regular therapy. After several hours of operation, physicians successfully excised a portion of the voice box to treat the cancer.
“Before anaesthesia, I offered silent prayers and surrendered everything to God. When I woke up, it felt like a movie scene: I was in the ICU, strapped and immobile, with beeps all around,” he narrated.
“My wife, who had accompanied me, stood nearby, overwhelmed. Nurses checked me, and the doctors confirmed I had woken up,” he added.
“Though exhausted, I was still very eager to know how the operation went.”
But just as the recovery process began, he received another devastating blow: on the day of his three-month post-surgery evaluation, a colleague told him of a termination notice at Standard Group.
When Namulanda returned to Kenya from India, he attempted to appeal the decision, hoping that the company would reconsider hiring him due to his medical condition.

“A colleague informed me he’d received a termination notice and was reaching out to thank me for giving him a chance to work at KTN. I was in shock, as I wasn’t aware of any retrenchment plans,” Namulanda stated.
He stated that, despite his plea, the corporation insisted on his termination, with severance pay paid in ten monthly instalments.
Namulanda alleges he was told to sign the letter or risk losing his money, so he signed. Fourteen months later, he says he is still requesting the full payment of his severance payout.
“I have written several emails to explain how badly I need this money to get me out of my current financial strain that is threatening to take me back, but I still haven’t gotten any breakthrough. I remain hopeful as I pray about the matter,” he explained.
