WAJIR: Unknown Gunmen Shoot Police Officer, Steal Vehicle
A police officer was critically injured in an ambush in Diff, Wajir County, on New Year’s Day.
Authorities say the cop is presently being treated in a hospital after being wounded by suspected gunmen at the Diff Shopping Centre.
The attackers apparently forced him out of his official police vehicle and drove away with it.
The police, driving a Toyota Land Cruiser, were ambushed while doing a U-turn in Diff township.
Witnesses and police said the attackers fired at him with AK-47 rifles, injuring him in the chest and mouth.

Witnesses identified the offenders as four in number and driving a white, unmarked Toyota Probox.
Two people allegedly carried out the attack, while the other two remained in the waiting vehicle.
The stolen Land Cruiser is thought to have been driven toward Hambalash Road, near the Kenya-Somalia border.
The cop was brought to the hospital for specialized care, and authorities said investigations are still ongoing.
Local officials stated that the loss of the truck has left the police in the area with restricted mobility.
Similar events have occurred in the region, with police vehicles allegedly stolen and driven across the border into Somalia.
The attack came a day after militants reportedly targeted the Fino Special Operations Group base in Mandera with a rocket-propelled grenade.

According to officials, security officers on the ground successfully thwarted the attack.
Intelligence reports indicate that armed groups remain active in the area, and security agencies are increasing operations along the Kenya-Somalia border to prevent further attacks.
Somalia has faced ongoing instability since 1991, following the overthrow of President Siad Barre. The conflict has contributed to the rise of armed groups in the region.
Kenya launched Operation Linda Nchi in October 2011 after gunmen attacked tourists on the coast, which the government considered a threat to national security.
