Murder Suspect Dies in Police Custody in Bomet

A man arrested in connection with the death of his fiancée died in police custody at the Longisa Police Station in Bomet County.

Police identified the suspect as Anthony Njenga Kariuki, 33, and detained him on Tuesday in connection with the killing of Caro Ngetich, a teacher.

Ngetich died approximately a week ago in her leased Longisa home.

Kariuki was arraigned before a Bomet court earlier on Wednesday, and the prosecution requested and received orders to hold him for seven more days to allow police to conclude their investigations.

He was returned to Longisa Police Station at 1.30 p.m. and put back in jail.

Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander Michael Mwenda said officers discovered Kariuki unresponsive inside his cell during a routine inspection.

“The suspect was found unresponsive in his cell during a normal routine inspection by officers on duty. Preliminary indications suggest he died while alone in custody,” Mwenda said.

He stated that investigations had been begun to determine the exact circumstances behind the suspect’s death, even while police were still investigating Ngetich’s death.

The episode has exacerbated the anguish of Ngetich’s family, colleagues, and community members, who had been waiting for the results of the investigation into her death.

According to the family, a postmortem investigation performed on Wednesday at Longisa County Referral Hospital revealed that Ngetich had spinal injuries and was approximately one month pregnant at the time of her death.

Janet Ngetich, Caro’s sister, said the family had initially been informed that her sister may have slipped and fallen at the scene where her body was found.

However, she said this account differed from the findings of the postmortem examination.

“We want justice for our sister. What we were told at the scene is completely different from what the postmortem revealed,” Janet said.

The Bomet County branch of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) also expressed concern over the matter.

Branch Executive Secretary Paul Kimeto described Ngetich’s death as tragic and called for comprehensive and speedy investigations.

Kimeto urged law enforcement agencies to ensure transparency and accountability as inquiries into both deaths continue.
