Azimio La Umoja Announces Its New Leader As 2027 Campaigns Heat Up

The Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition made significant changes to its top leadership, and Kalonzo Musyoka was named its leader.

A letter outlining the modifications was sent to the Registrar of Political Parties after a joint meeting of the coalition’s governing bodies was conducted on Monday, February 2.

Suba MP Carol Omondi was confirmed as the Secretary General at the coalition’s National Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by former President Uhuru Kenyatta. This effectively replaced her Suna East colleague Junet Mohamed.

Minutes of the February 2 meeting, resolutions authorizing official changes, and a statutory form PP7 outlining the leadership changes were among the documents the registrar received.

The submittal also includes an official letter dated February 2, 2026, issued to Hon. Junet Mohamed informing him of his removal from the role of Secretary General.

“These changes are part of a deliberate effort to reposition and revitalise the coalition,” Azimio said in a statement following the meeting.

“The goal is to foster greater cohesion, effectiveness and unity as the coalition advances its agenda for the nation.”

Registrar of Political Parties and CEO J.C. Lorionokou then recommended Azimio to publicize the changes in compliance with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, Cap. 7D, which oversees the notice and publication of changes in party leadership.

This Office acknowledges receipt of your letter of February 2, 2026, regarding the joint meeting of the Azimio Council and the National Coalition Executive Council on February 2, 2026, and the submission of the papers.

The political party is urged to notify the change of officers in accordance with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, Chapter 7D.

Elevation of Kalonzo to party leader is a deliberate move to give the party a better sense of direction while leveraging on the Wiper Patriotic Front boss’ past experience in coalitions.

The changes come at an interesting time, as the National Liberal Party (NLP), which is among the founding members of the Azimio Coalition, formally petitioned the Registrar of Political parties to provide clarity on the coalition’s current status.

Leadership changes also came at a time when the coalition’s executive director, Raphael Tuju, announced his resignation.
