DCI Detectives Arrest Activist Mwabili Mwagodi At The Kenya-Tanzania Border

Mwabili Mwagodi, a Kenyan activist, was allegedly arrested and detained at the Lunga Lunga Police Station after being denied permission to leave the country on Sunday, February 15.

Mwagodi said in a message posted on his official X account on Monday that he was barred from leaving the nation on his trip to Dar es Salaam yesterday due to a Red alert issued against his passport.

Mwagodi alleges the alarm was issued in early 2025 by a Directorate of Criminal Investigation Officer (DCI) stationed at Mazingira House on Kiambu Road.

“On my way to Dar es Salaam on 15th February 2026, I was denied exit out of Kenya at the Lunga Lunga border by the Immigration department due to a Red Notice issued against my passport around Jan/Feb 2025 by a DCI officer – Serious Crimes Unit at Mazingira House on Kiambu Road,” Mwagodi said.

“The officer issued the warrant of arrest but did not indicate the crime I committed and/or what I am to be charged with,” he added.

According to the activist, police officers at the Lunga Lunga Police Post are awaiting further instructions from the DCI “on what to do with him”.

“I was handed over to DCI at the Lunga Lunga Border Police Post, and they are waiting for instructions from Mazingira House on what I am being detained for, and what they should do with me,” Mwagodi said.

“The OCS and DCI officer I am under the custody of visited the morning of 16/02 in my jail cell and informed me that they are still waiting for instructions from DCI Mazingira House on what to do with me,” he added.

Attempts to contact the DCI for comment or to confirm the accusations were unsuccessful.

Mwagodi was kidnapped last year in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he worked for a hospitality company, and disappeared for many days.

He went missing around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, while traveling to Dar es Salaam via public transit.

His phone fell silent during the journey and his wife’s attempts to call him were futile.

When Mwagodi’s family sought help from the DCI on Saturday, July 26, the agency declined to intervene, citing jurisdictional limitations.

Hussein Khalid, CEO of Vocal Africa, accompanied the family to the DCI offices and confirmed the agency refused to take up the case because it occurred outside Kenya.

The family also reported the matter to the police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mwagodi was found dumped in Kinondo, Kwale County, on July 27, 2025, after being missing for four days.
