Police Teargas At Sifuna Rally Unmove Crowd As Supporters Cool It Off
Linda Mwananchi’s supporters in Kakamega have refused to leave the premises after Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna mounted the stage to address the gathering.
In his reaction, Sifuna asked supporters to remain at the venue, stressing that the gathering would go ahead as planned, and to safely disperse the teargas canisters.
He also advised people not to throw stones at the cops.
The interruption comes a day after Western Regional Commander Issa Mohamud warned people that he would keep the calm and deploy police if necessary.
Police deployed teargas again today, apparently hoping to disperse the gathering.

The commander indicated that he had never received any formal communication from Sifuna telling him of the planned gathering, and that he only learned about it through social media posts.
Furthermore, Issa claimed he had received information that goons armed with weapons were being transported to Kakamega to offer security for the demonstration.
The current conflict between Sifuna and the government is claimed to stem from the recent Linda Mwananchi tour in Kitengelea, which resulted in the deaths of two persons and the injuries of fifty more.
Sifuna accused the government of using state violence and hired goons to demolish the rally’s stage platform and sound equipment.

He explicitly faulted President Ruto and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, stating they are intolerant of democratic competition.
Despite the teargas and violence, Sifuna stated, “We shall not relent,” and thanked Kitengela residents for their resilience in showing up despite the morning’s intimidation.
In his response to these accusations, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen claimed that the police were not issued with an official notice on the planned protests.
Sifuna disputed it, asserting that police were duly notified and that he would provide “receipts” of the notification for future events to prevent similar excuses.
