TRANS NZOIA: Food Poisoning Hospitalises Over 30 Pupils In Kitale
Over 30 Grade 4 pupils from Big Tree Comprehensive School in Kitale were rushed to the hospital after suffering suspected food poisoning.
The pupils, on Thursday, March 12, complained of stomach aches shortly after sharing mangoes at school earlier in the day.
According to reports, one pupil had brought two mangoes to school and shared them with classmates before the incident unfolded.
The affected learners were taken to Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kitale, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Doctors confirmed that the pupils were admitted with symptoms consistent with food poisoning.
The contractors confirmed that the mangoes might have been contaminated with pesticides, though investigations are still ongoing.
“Most of them had taken kitchen fruit which had been contaminated with pesticides in the morning,” a doctor at the hospital stated.
“We started our management; we gave them fluids and some medication.”
The doctors also confirmed that the pupils were not severely affected and that they were in stable condition and were ready to be discharged.

“They weren’t badly affected, so after medication, they got well, and they are ready to be discharged home,” he added.
Medical officials indicated that more than 31 pupils had initially complained of stomach discomfort before 23 of them were taken to the hospital for further observation and treatment.
Health officials have since collected samples of the mangoes for laboratory analysis to determine the exact cause of the illness.
At the same time, police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident as parents await a statement from the authorities.
