Governor Nyong’o Speaks After Muhoroni Clashes, Calls For Lands Ministry’s Intervention

Kisumu County Governor Anyang Nyong’o has written to the Ministry of Lands, urging urgent intervention to resolve escalating land tensions along the Kisumu–Kericho border.

The governor, in a statement on Monday, March 16, weighed in after skirmishes were witnessed at the Muhoroni Junction a day earlier where one person lost his life .

According to the governor, the conflict was made worse because of the lack of a clear physical demarcation of the disputed land, which has fueled tensions between communities in the border area.

The absence of a clear physical demarcation of this land is exacerbating the current tensions,” the governor said in a statement.

I have therefore written a reminder letter to the Ministry of Lands at the national government, to urgently provide the necessary technical support to the Koguta Clan.”

This must include the expedited survey and beaconing of the land, the facilitation of its subdivision in line with the NLC directive, and the orderly settlement of the rightful beneficiaries,” he added.

The county boss also expressed concern over the escalating unrest and its impact on residents, emphasising the need for a swift resolution to prevent further loss of life.

While we strongly support the revival and sustainability of the sugar industry as a key pillar of our local economy, we cannot allow the rights of our citizens to be trampled through intimidation or extra-judicial action,” he said.

The governor noted that the contested land was lawfully allocated to one clan by the National Land Commission and subsequently affirmed by the High Court of Kenya.

The land dispute along the Kisumu–Kericho border has persisted for years, with tensions often flaring up over claims of ownership and settlement rights in the agriculturally rich zone near Muhoroni.

The region lies within Kenya’s sugar belt, making the land particularly valuable for cane farming and related economic activities tied to nearby sugar mills.

On Sunday, clashes resulted in severe damage to property, with part of a sugar plantation torched, while some motor vehicles were set ablaze from the fracas.

In 2025, Nyong’o and his Kericho counterpart, Erick Mutai, declared border disputes a thing of the past.

This was after the duo’s collective efforts to end the disputes with the help of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
