Kenya Responds To Iran After Pushback Over U.S Alignment On Middle East War

President William Ruto’s administration has reiterated its neutral position on the escalating Middle East conflict following criticism by the Iranian government.

This is after the Iranian Embassy in Nairobi accused the Kenyan government of allegedly siding with the United States and Israel in the ongoing war.

In a statement on Wednesday, April 8,  Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei clarified that Kenya remains committed to the principles of the United Nations Charter, including respect for sovereignty and peaceful conflict resolution.

He stated that Kenya was non-aligned in the conflict, noting that its main concern was safeguarding its national interests, such as energy security, trade routes and the welfare of Kenyans living in the Gulf region.

“We emphasise that Kenya remains non-aligned in the conflict. We prioritise Kenyan interests, including energy security, trade, and citizens in the Gulf,” Korir noted.

He went on to add, “We stand in solidarity with all nations which have borne a huge toll as a consequence of this escalating conflict.”

The PS also welcomed yesterday’s ceasefire announced by the U.S. and the Iranian governments, expressing hope that they could pave the way for long-term peace in the volatile region.

Sing’oei’s response followed after the Iranian embassy in Nairobi on Tuesday evening criticised Kenya for allegedly condemning Tehran’s aggression on Gulf countries.

Terah claimed that allowing territory to be used for attacks against another state constitutes an act of aggression, further alleging that some regional countries have facilitated such actions.

“The U.S and the Israeli regime have violated Article 2 of the UN Charter, which requires all members to refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state,” Iran argued.

While defending its military actions, Iran stated that its response is a lawful exercise of self-defence under international law.
