DRAMA: MP Salasya Found Live-Streaming Parliament Proceedings, Ordered To Delete

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya was forced to apologise on Tuesday after livestreaming parliamentary proceedings.

The session was dominated by instability and a power struggle about whether, Kenya Kwanza or the Azimio Coalition, should hold the majority in the House.

It came after a February 7 High Court verdict that chastised Speaker Moses Wetang’ula for calling Kenya Kwanza the majority party.

Salasya live-streamed the ensuing melee while Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah was on his feet, leading to the controversy over whose side should hold House leadership positions.

Wetang’ula authorized debate on the issue after members of the House were unable to reach a unanimous decision.

This occurred even after the Azimio team, led by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, assumed the majority position in accordance with the court decision.

But it wasn’t until much later, after tempers had calmed, that Ichung’wah informed the speaker that Salasya had been live-streaming the proceedings on his social media accounts.

“On a matter of decorum of the House, I was just perusing what is going on my phone, and I saw MP Salasya livestreaming the proceedings of the House,” Ichung’wah said.

“He was recording himself from his seat at the back; the House under the Parliamentary Service Commission has given us live coverage on national TV, and we cannot belittle the work of this House through live streaming on your phone.”

Ichung’wah urged the speaker to order Salasya to apologize and remove the footage from his social media accounts.

Salasya originally denied knowledge of what Ichung’wah was saying, citing claims that he had yet to confirm.

“I don’t know what Ichung’wah is talking about, I also have my own contribution I wanted to make. Maybe MP Ichung’wah can say what I said,” Salasya said.

The Speaker warned the politician that if the charges were proven true, he would face consequences.

“I will instruct the Clerk, to get the logs on your phone, and if I find that what is being alleged is correct, I will invite a member to file a complaint and refer you to the Powers and Privileges Committee for appropriate action; you can also be named,” said the Speaker.

“If you did that, I want to guide you as a young member because I want you to grow in your leadership. The Bible says the greatest word in human relations is one word called sorry. If you did that, say sorry and delete it, and we move on.”

The member bowed to criticism and apologized to the House, stating he would remove the footage from his social media accounts.

“Mr Speaker, I apologise, withdraw, and delete,” Salasya said.

The Speaker directed that the Clerk of the National Assembly confirm with the legislator if the videos had been destroyed.
