EACC Detectives Raid Governor’s Office, Residence

On Tuesday, April 15, EACC detectives stormed Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s office and residence.

Nine other senior county officials’ homes were also searched during the raid for possible misappropriation of public monies and conflicts of interest.

The ten public officials are apparently under investigation for misappropriation of funds in the county.

For months, county political leaders have called for a probe into the governor who replaced unpopular former Governor Ferdinand Waititu.

Waititu is presently serving a prison sentence after being convicted of a Ksh588 million graft case.

In February 2024, Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa requested that the EACC investigate the county’s payment system, stating that the governor had shifted from an automated to a manual one.

The senator claimed that this alteration had given an ideal cover for phantom workers and that Ksh390 million had been plundered under this pretext.

“The reversion to a manual payroll system, under the guise of technical issues, has created the perfect environment for theft,” Thang’wa stated on February 27, 2024.

“Suspected ghost workers have received over Ksh390 million in fraudulent payments.”

He further claimed that 15 county officers had earned more than Ksh500 million through this fraud and that the county was illegally contracting over 200 officials.

“I urge the EACC to act swiftly and decisively in halting this plunder of public resources and bringing those responsible to justice,” he stated.

Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah and his Thika Town counterpart Alice Ng’ang’a made similar demands to EACC and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) four months later, on November 27, 2024.

This followed the Auditor General’s report, which revealed significant disparities in county government spending.

MP Ng’ang’a accused the governor of embezzlement, while the majority leader of the National Assembly requested that the two agencies investigate the discrepancy to establish the cause.

“I want the DCI and EACC to read the auditor general’s report and investigate what happened,” Ichungwah noted.

“Whether you are an MCA or a governor, your days are numbered, and in Kimabu County, the days have finally come. Let EACC and DCI take the report, do investigations and arrest people,” Ichung’wah added.
