Gachagua Allies’ Rally Attacked By Police In Gilgil
In another strange turn of events, police officials threw tear gas canisters at a gathering held by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political friends on Saturday afternoon.
Tension rose when Gachagua’s allies, led by Nyandarua Senator John Methu, came to address the people of Gilgil in Nakuru County, forcing police officials to start dispersing the throng.
During the event, one person was reportedly injured in the leg.

Videos and photographs widely shared on social media also showed police officers engaging in running skirmishes with people, who replied by throwing stones.
While the root reason of the disturbance has yet to be determined, opposition leaders have decried the incident as not just evidence of authoritarianism but also cowardly.
According to a statement from Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens’ Party, the officers planned the attack on illegal orders from their superiors.

The DCP contended that what occurred in Gilgil was not only illegal but also a direct attack on democracy and an antiquated mutilation of Kenya’s Constitution.
“The Political Parties Act and the Constitution of Kenya guarantee every political party the right to freely engage, organise, and mobilise support across the country,” read part of the party’s statement.

The statement further read, “These repeated and planned acts of intimidation and suppression against our party, DCP, must be called out and stopped.”
While denouncing the attack, opposition lawmakers urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take swift and decisive action against those responsible.
They lamented that despite making several attempts to raise the issue, their efforts had been in vain due to a lack of accountability from authorities mandated to investigate police excesses.
“If this trend of police brutality and interference continues, our supporters may be forced to respond and defend their rights within the bounds of the law,” the opposition leaders warned.
