Ruto Addresses RSF Links, Plays Down Sudan Peace Solution
President William Ruto has denied links to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Ruto has refuted charges that his administration was involved in arms smuggling or aiding either side in Sudan’s prolonged conflict, which has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis.
During an interview with Al Jazeera, Ruto called the claims unfounded and politically motivated.
He underlined that Kenya’s mission has always been to promote regional peace and dialogue.
At the same time, Ruto denied rumors that the RSF had been welcomed in Nairobi, citing Sudan’s official claims that Kenya was harbouring rebels.
He underlined that Kenya remained a democratic country that welcomes all peace-loving people.
He claimed that Nairobi has frequently been unfairly targeted, pointing out that similar meetings have occurred in neighboring countries, like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), without the same level of attention.
“That is not true; that is absolutely false. I can tell you that as a democratic country, there are always allegations,” he stated.
“The DRC accused us of having hosted some people meeting in Nairobi. There are people meeting in Nairobi whom I sometimes do not even know if they are meeting.”
The President also stated that Kenya’s approach is based on fostering communication among opposing parties rather than taking sides, reiterating the country’s neutrality in Sudan’s political issue.
He also commented on the nature of the conflict, claiming that both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF were equally culpable for the upheaval in the country.

“On Sudan, I hold the position that both SAF and RSF are cut from the same cloth,” he said.
“They are a product of an overthrow of a people’s government, and therefore, you cannot say there is any difference between the two.”
“My position is that these two generals have no solution to the Sudan crisis because both of them believe that they have to use military means to settle the situation. This is a governance problem,” Ruto noted.
Meanwhile, the claims against Kenya were uncovered through a collaborative investigation by NTV and open-source intelligence platform Bellingcat.

On March 14 this year, the government of Sudan suspended all imports from Kenya following the latter’s decision to host the RSF, a rebel group currently fighting the Sudanese army for control of the country.
Sudan announced the immediate restriction of all imports from Kenya, barring entry via ports, railways, and air transport.
