BUNGOMA: Police Arrest 8 During Voting, Seize Crude Weapons

During an intelligence-led operation to improve security for today’s by-elections, Bungoma police arrested eight people and seized a cache of rudimentary weapons.

The culprits were apprehended in the Sikusi region of the Chwele-Bungoma route.

During a check of the vehicle, officers discovered weapons such as machetes, clubs, metal rods, and other objects that could be used in violent conflicts.

The individuals were taken into custody at Bungoma Police Station, where they are being profiled, processed, and arraigned.

“All the suspects were taken to the police station and placed in custody, pending processing and arraignment,” police said in a statement.

The operation is part of a larger security effort in Bungoma County in response to worries about potential involvement in Kabuchai Ward, one of 22 by-election areas around the country.

Earlier this week, police intervened to calm small conflicts reported in Kabuchai, Kanduyi, and Webuye East ahead of the election.

Isolated instances of unrest have been reported as competing political supporters battled in several wards.

Police believe the recovered firearms were intended for use in conflicts aimed at intimidating voters or disrupting the electoral process.

Similar security measures were reported in other counties, including Embu, Kakamega, and Murang’a, where voters took part in the 22 by-elections.

The National Police Service has underlined its commitment to ensuring order during the election period.

“The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to serve and protect the public,” the statement read.

“We urge all citizens to exercise restraint, follow the law, and allow the democratic process to unfold without interference.”
