Gachagua Speaks After Nakuru Meeting Blockade By The Police

Following the disruption of his public engagement in Nakuru County, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua accused the National Police Service’s leadership of forsaking its constitutional responsibility and permitting political influence in policing.

In a statement issued on Monday, Gachagua stated that during a meeting with the Inspector General of Police and other national officials on January 30, 2026, the police leadership provided unequivocal assurances that the service will stay politically neutral.

He said that they committed to preserving constitutional liberties and not interfering with public meetings or leaders’ interactions with citizens.

He claims such assurances have subsequently been broken.

Gachagua claimed that the police command in Nakuru County had been effectively transferred to politically linked individuals.

This includes associates of President William Ruto, which undermines competent and unbiased police.

He also stated that he had previously notified the Inspector General that the county’s police command structure was corrupted.

According to Gachagua, his convoy was barred from entering Nakuru County from Nyandarua on Monday while on its way to address citizens at Naivasha’s Kinamba Trading Centre.

He stated that a roadblock was established near the Karati River on orders provided by telephone to the Nakuru County Police Commander, preventing the meeting from taking place.

He further alleged that police officers deployed to the scene, travelling in four vehicles under the Naivasha police command, masked their faces and harassed members of the public for over an hour.

The officers reportedly withdrew only after large crowds gathered and demanded the removal of the roadblock.

The former deputy president also accused the Naivasha police command of repeatedly disrupting his meetings in the past, citing incidents in Mai Mahiu and Naivasha town in March 2025.

He claimed that junior officers have privately complained about being used for “political work” at a time when crime levels in the area are rising.
