Baringo Central MP Joshua Chepyegon Kandie has asked for a thorough assessment of foreign nationals working in Kenya, expressing worries about their influence on local job chances.

Kandie, speaking before the House on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, encouraged the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security to present a full report on work permits awarded to foreigners during the previous five years.

“I demand a report on the number of foreign nationals who have been issued with work permits in Kenya, indicating the duration of the work permits for the past five years,” began MP Kandie.

The MP emphasized the significance of migration policies that find a balance between international cooperation and protecting the interests of Kenyan workers, particularly young people facing continuously high unemployment rates.

Kandie’s request also included specific information on the number of work licenses awarded to foreign nationals, as well as the types of permits granted and their lengths.

He also wanted clarity on the position of immigrants whose permits have expired as of January 2026, noting that slack enforcement could result in illicit work practices.

Kandie also requested an explanation of the steps being taken by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to identify, monitor, and remove persons who labor unlawfully after their permits expire.

The proposal comes amid a rising public discussion over whether foreign workers are taking jobs that competent Kenyan natives could otherwise fill.

“Expatriates contribute a transfer of knowledge, investment, and skill development,” acknowledged Kandie.

“However, it is imperative that their engagement in the local job market does not undermine employment opportunities for qualified Kenyan citizens,” added the Baringo Central legislator.

Concerns were also raised about vulnerable groups, with the MP calling for safeguards to ensure fair access to job opportunities across all sectors.

Additionally, Kandie questioned the criteria used to issue work permits, particularly in cases where the required skills are already available within the country.

She told the House that stricter vetting processes are necessary to ensure permits are only granted in areas with genuine skill gaps.

This comes a few days after the scandal involving the Russian national uploading intimate images of encounters with Kenyan women.

The committee is now expected to deliver a detailed report outlining government actions and policy safeguards to protect local employment while maintaining Kenya’s global economic competitiveness.
