The African Union has publicly set the process for the African Union Commission leadership elections, which will take place in February 2025.

All eight senior leadership positions at the AUC are open for candidate submissions, including the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, and six Commissioner positions.

According to a statement made by the African Union, the elections would be guided by the principle of inter-regional rotation, with the Eastern region submitting candidates for the job of Chairperson.

Notably, Kenya has submitted opposition leader Raila Odinga as a contender for this position, making it of critical importance to the country.

On the other side, the Northern area will submit candidates for the position of Deputy Chairperson, with both regions submitting male and female candidates.

The AU set the regions’ deadline as August 6, 2024.

Once all entries have been received, the candidates will be pre-selected by a panel of five, assisted by an independent African consultant group.

The panel has already been formed and will include the following: Prof. Paul Ngarambe, Burundi, representing the Central Region, H.E Amb. Konjit SineGiorgis, Ethiopia, representing the Eastern Region, and H.E Amb. Nozipho Joyce Mxakato-Diseko from South Africa represents the Southern Region, while H.E Amb. Patrick Hayford from Ghana represents the Western Region.

However, the Northern area has yet to complete discussions and thus has not yet listed a nominee for the position.

When authorized for the post, candidates for the position of Chairperson of the AUC will submit a curriculum vitae as well as vision statements describing how they intend to handle the AU’s most pressing concerns.

Furthermore, in accordance with a tradition established in 2017, contenders for the Chairperson position will be required to participate in a televised discussion known as MjadalaAfrika, during which they will explain their vision and execution strategies.

“All candidates for the position of the Chairperson of the Commission shall participate in a televised debate which shall be broadcasted live to African citizens in which they shall present their visions and ideas on the implementation of Agenda 2063,” stated the AU.

Following the debate, all members of the AU summit will participate in a secret ballot election process.

Raila Kenyatta is anticipated to compete against front-runners from Somalia, Djibouti, and the Seychelles.
