MATHARE: Police Kill ONE Person, Injure TWO During Demos

Running clashes between people and police erupted in a Nairobi informal neighborhood on Tuesday, killing one and injuring two, according to AFP journalists.

This follows the purported kidnapping of two activists by security agents.

A large police deployment shut down Kenya’s capital last week after protestors declared a day of commemoration for those slain by security forces in prior rallies.

The Mathare 4A residents joined the family of Michael Oloo in pressing the government to produce him. Oloo disappeared over a week ago and has yet to be traced. They gave a 24-hour ultimatum, after which they will return to the streets.

While June 25 passed without incident due to the huge police presence, several activists were arrested and some went missing for days.

Others had been detained prior to that day.

Fresh protests broke out in the Mathare informal settlement on Tuesday over the disappearances, with an AFP reporter saying that one person had been shot dead and two wounded.

I’m so heartbroken. We had a peaceful protest demanding the release of Maxi and Zizou. 3 people have been shot by police. 1 confirmed dead. And PS Omollo has held a presser alleging Maxi na Zizou have locked themselves in the house. The two were “abducted under unclear circumstances” over the past two weeks.

“The action underscores growing concern over enforced disappearances,” she said in a statement.

Images on social media appeared to show small groups clashing with officers, with tear gas seen rising between buildings.

A sprawling informal settlement on Nairobi’s east, Mathare is home to several hundred thousand people.
