Kenya In Iran’s Crosshairs After Now-Deleted State Media’s Post On US-Israel War

Iran’s state-owned broadcaster, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), has raised serious alarm in two African countries.

This is after posting a now-deleted tweet that Kenya has ‘strategic military reserves’ and will join the ongoing Middle East war ‘at the opportune time’.

The station, claiming an expert, stated that the reserves could be deployed in the continuing battle between Iran, the US, and Israel, but gave no evidence to back up the assertion.

The post, which emerged on IRIB’s official X account on Thursday, July 9, cited an international affairs expert who said that both Kenya and Nigeria had military reserves that would ‘join the field at the opportune time’.

It read: “Kenya and Nigeria also possess strategic military reserves that will enter the field at the appropriate time.”

Nonetheless, the broadcaster did not explain what the alleged strategic military reserves were, provide any supporting evidence, or clarify why Kenya and Nigeria were mentioned in relation to the conflict.

The post was subsequently deleted without explanation, prompting speculation over whether it had been published in error or whether it reflected the personal views of the guest expert rather than the official position of the Iranian government.

As of Saturday, July 11, neither the Kenyan government nor the Nigerian government had issued an official response to the claims made by the leading Iranian broadcaster.

Similarly, Iranian authorities have also not clarified whether the remarks represented the government’s position or were explicitly the opinion of the said analyst.

The claims quickly spread across social media, generating widespread debate among Kenyans over the country’s alleged involvement in the ongoing conflict.

Many users questioned why Kenya had been mentioned in the statement, noting that the country has not announced any military deployment or participation in military operations involving either the U.S. or Israel.

“Iran as a country should not be involved in a war with peaceful countries like Kenya,” claimed an online user.

“If this happens, then it could amount to an act of terrorism under international law.”

Others called on the government to maintain Kenya’s long-standing policy of pursuing diplomatic solutions to international disputes and avoid being drawn into the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
