Ichung’wah Goes After Gachagua Over ‘False, Malicious’ Ol Kalou Remarks

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has announced that he will sue former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over claims of a conspiracy to influence the impending Ol Kalou by-election.

On Friday, July 9, Ichung’wah disputed Gachagua’s assertions that he held meetings with local leaders in the area to coordinate voter bribery and interfere with the electoral process.

In a statement, the Kikuyu MP angrily denied the allegations, claiming that they were completely manufactured and slanderous.

“I take great exception to the baseless, false and malicious allegations levelled against Mr Gachagua regarding the forthcoming by-election of Ol Kalou today,” said Ichung’wah.

This comes just hours after Gachagua claimed that Ichung’wah convened Deputy County Commissioners in Gilgil and told them to mobilize chiefs to deliver money to voters on the eve of the by-election.

According to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, the administrators were allegedly directed to bribe voters on Sunday night, which coincides with the election period.

Responding to the allegations, Ichung’wah said Gachagua had resorted to cheap theatrics, manufactured propaganda and outright lies after realising that his preferred candidate would be defeated in Ol Kalau.

He maintained that he had never held meetings with Deputy County Commissioners to influence the election and dismissed the claims as baseless conspiracy theories designed to tarnish his reputation.

The Majority Leader further described Gachagua’s allegations as irresponsible, saying they unfairly cast doubt on both his integrity and the credibility of the country’s electoral institutions.

Ichung’wah said the accusations had crossed the line from political rhetoric to defamation.

The MP added that he would institute legal proceedings against Gachagua and require him to substantiate every claim before the court.

“The allegations of bribery of IEBC officials are not only irresponsible but also meant to portray me as a person devoid of electoral and moral integrity,” Ichung’wah claimed.

“Because this empty political rhetoric now touches on my integrity, to preserve the sanctity of our electoral processes and protect democracy, I will take legal action against Gachagua,” he added.

The accusations and counter-accusations come as political temperatures continue to rise in Ol Kalau ahead of the July 16 Ol by-election, with rival camps trading allegations over the conduct of the poll.
