Motorists Risk Jail As NTSA Announces Safety Compliance Checks Ahead Of School Reopening

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) announced on Thursday increased compliance checks on all roads across the country ahead of school reopening.

In its advisory, the NTSA urged Kenyans to be aware of the planned school reopening, which will result in increased travel by school children across the country.

During the same time period, the authority also warned drivers against speeding, reckless overtaking, driving in unsafe vehicles, driving while intoxicated, and driving fatigue.

Drivers were also warned not to carry too many passengers and to avoid taking unfamiliar routes, which are known to cause accidents.

NTSA also urged parents and guardians to take responsibility for ensuring their children arrive at their respective schools safely.

According to the Authority, it is critical that vehicles transporting children are insured, roadworthy, and equipped with functional speed limiters.

Drivers were also instructed to ensure that they meet licensing requirements, such as having valid road service licences and inspection certificates.

The directive comes just a week before students resume classes in the midst of the planned teacher and motorist strikes, which will begin on Monday, August 26.

Following failed talks with the government on Wednesday, August 21, teachers’ unions vowed to go ahead with the planned strike.

The announcement was made jointly by the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers.

This comes after they were unable to reach an agreement with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) regarding the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

During the meeting, the teachers’ union representatives rejected TSC’s proposal to only implement a portion of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
