Tahmeed Bus Issues Statement On Accident Fatalities, Denies Double Incident

Tahmeed, a Kenyan bus operator, has issued a statement refuting claims that two people died in an accident involving one of its buses.

In a press release, the company clarified that the accident occurred in Nairobi, near the GPO.

“Around 12:30 in the morning, one of our buses from Mumias to Mombasa was involved in a mishap in Nairobi near GPO,” the company shared.

According to the transportation company, some of the passengers on board at the time of the accident were able to escape with minor injuries.

Following the incident, a rescue bus was dispatched to pick up the stranded passengers and transport them to their destination in Mombasa.

“All of the passengers and crew escaped with just minor injuries, and after being treated at Kenyatta Hospital, a rescue bus was dispatched to pick them up at 7 a.m. today (Monday),” Tahmeed stated.

Earlier, media reports claimed that the Tahmeed bus was involved in an accident in Naivasha, killing two people and injuring 22.

However, Tahmeed dismissed the reports highlighting the accident involving one of their buses had no deaths and some passengers escaped with minor injuries.

The Mombasa-Busia transport operator stated that it was collaborating with security officials to determine what caused the accident in the early hours of the morning.

“We are assisting the authorities in their efforts to determine what caused the accident, and we will update you as soon as we have more information,” the company added.

“The safety of every crew member and passenger will always be our priority.”

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority Act (NTSA), over 2000 people died on Kenyan roads in just six months this year, from January to July 7, 2024.

Similarly, over 10,166 other people, including drivers and pedestrians, were treated for injuries sustained in an estimated 11,502 crashes.

The NTSA estimates that 3,000 people die in road accidents each year, with many of them occurring on weekends, during celebrations, and public holidays.

The hours between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. are considered the peak time for accidents, with drink-driving and carelessness cited as two of the main causes.
