According to local officials, dozens of people were killed when a passenger plane carrying approximately 70 people crashed in Kazakhstan.

Authorities in Azerbaijan, where the flight originated, report at least 30 survivors.

Azerbaijan Airlines Flight J2-8243 caught fire while attempting to make an emergency landing in the Kazakh city of Aktau.

The jet was on its way to Grozny, Russia, but was diverted owing to fog, the airline told the BBC.

The footage shows the aircraft approaching the ground at high speed with its landing gear down, before erupting into flames as it lands.

The airline stated that the plane “made an emergency landing” just 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) from Aktau.

It took off from Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, at 03:55 GMT on Wednesday and crashed at about 06:28, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24.

According to Russian media, the aircraft crashed with a flock of birds before crashing, however, this has not yet been confirmed.

Officials from the countries concerned have given differing figures for those on board and those who survived.

The airline stated that 62 passengers and 5 crew members were on board the Embraer 190, however, other accounts put the number at 72. The reported number of survivors varied between 28 and 32.

The majority of them on board were Azerbaijanis, although there were also passengers from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

Both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have opened investigations into the crash. Embraer stated to the BBC that it was “ready to assist all relevant authorities”.

The BBC contacted Azerbaijan Airlines for comment.

Embraer, a Brazilian manufacturer, is a lesser rival to Boeing and Airbus but has an excellent safety record.
