This is not the first time a partially demolished structure has collapsed in the same area.
On May 14, several people died after becoming trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building.
According to witnesses, more than ten trapped people, the majority of whom were residents, went to collect scrap metal that had been declared available following demolition.
Residents living near the scene of the tragedy were seen standing a distance away in widely circulated videos, even as responders continued to rescue victims.
After about an hour of searching, four people were successfully extracted from the debris and rushed to a nearby hospital.
“Efforts to reach others suspected of being trapped continue,” the Kenya Red Cross said in a statement.
