ODM Still Holds Finance Bill Rejection Close, Urges MPs To Vote Against
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) reportedly sent them letters regarding the Finance Bill 2024.
During a media interview on Tuesday, Seme MP James Nyikal revealed that the letters were sent to all members informing them to vote on the bill.
Nyikal added that the letters were sent earlier this week, emphasizing the party’s stance on the widely opposed Finance Bill 2024.
“I know letters have been sent to ODM members but I have not received one. However, I am aware of the party’s position,” he added.
The politician explained that the letters were only sent to ODM members of the National Assembly, not the Senate.
According to Nyikal, the government should amend the bill to include suggestions from Kenyans.
He also mentioned that if the bill was unpopular among Kenyans, it would be difficult to implement.
He urged the relevant body to drop the bill and draft a new one in the best interests of Kenyans.
The ODM, led by Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, has urged its members to oppose the bill, which would raise the cost of living for the majority of Kenyans.
On the other hand, Hassan Joho, ODM deputy party leader, has warned all MPs not to pass the bill. He added that the party would deal with everyone who voted yes.
“We have emphasised previously that every party upholds principles and values and as ODM we stand for certain beliefs. If someone fails to comprehend this we will deal with them,” he stated over the weekend.
In May, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka threatened to lead large-scale protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
Kenyans have also planned a demonstration outside Parliament as part of the ‘Occupy Parliament’ campaign to oppose the bill.
The bill is scheduled to be tabled before Parliament today, but a few changes have been made.
