Mike Sonko Bashes Ruto Over The Finance Bill Stance Amid Nation-Wide Protests
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko criticized President William Ruto’s administration on Wednesday for using excessive force to deal with the demonstrations on Tuesday, June 25.
Taking to his X account, the outspoken politician urged the Head of State to keep his initial promise of upholding the constitution and protecting Kenyan citizens.
According to Sonko, the Tuesday incidents demonstrated the president’s failure to keep the promise he made to Kenyans during his swearing-in ceremony at the Kasarani grounds in Nairobi.
“His Excellency the President, if they have this country at heart, remember what you promised Kenyans during your swearing-in ceremony at Kasarani. You promised to abide by the constitution and protect Kenyans,” the former Governor stated.

My good friends in Statehouse, this is a wake-up call to you all. If my own son alienda demo last week na jana, Archbishop Jackson Ole sapit's son alishuka kwa gari to join his Gen Z mates kwa demo, Hon. Mwangi Kiunjuri's son, Nairobi Regional…
Sonko also urged President Ruto to reconsider his stance and order the withdrawal of the contentious Finance Bill 2024, which had pushed the country into violence.
“Please, withdraw the Finance Bill and return it to its drafters,” Sonko commented.
The former governor claimed that the Tuesday demonstration was one of the largest protests ever seen in East Africa.
Sonko also accused State House officials, including Ruto’s advisers, of ignoring the electorate’s concerns rather than addressing them.
“They should know power lies with the people and not their conmanship tactics. You can lie to people, but you can’t lie to them every day,” Sonko wrote.
Sonko’s message to the president comes just hours after demonstrators across the country took to the streets to protest the contentious Finance Bill 2024.
Protesters stormed the parliament buildings in Nairobi, vandalizing them and setting fire to a section of the structure.
Police on high alert intervened and shot several protestors, killing others and injuring others critically.
