
Police Shoot One Person Dead After Kitengela Anti-Gov’t Protests Turned Violent
On Tuesday, July 16, at least one person was shot and killed during anti-government protests in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
Several others were shot during the chaos, according to police. Police used water cannons and tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.
Officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) were deployed as backup for the police, who were briefly overwhelmed by protesters.
Businesses were attacked and robbed during the chaos. Demonstrators were then seen carrying the dead man, who had been shot in the head.

The group took the slain man to the local police station and dumped him there, accusing officers of killing him.
The main Namanga-Nairobi highway was closed for hours as police clashed with protesters.
According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), this brings the total number of deaths during the ongoing protests to over 51.

The human rights organization also reported 413 injuries and 59 abductions during the protests.
Demonstrations broke out in more than 25 counties on Tuesday, including Nairobi, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Makueni, Machakos, Laikipia, Homa Bay, Kilifi, Nyeri, Kiambu, and Turkana.
Other counties are Kajiado, Baringo, Kericho, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kakamega, Bungoma, Embu, and Trans Nzoia.
In Baringo, angry protesters stormed Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi’s office in Kabarnet town, demanding an audience with him.
The rowdy protesters, mostly youth, marched down the road leading to the governor’s office, chanting Cheboi’s name in unison.
After hours of protesting outside the governor’s office, Cheboi was forced to emerge and address the crowd.
