Governor Sakaja Speaks After Horrendous Encounter At Toi Market In Kibera
Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has broken his silence following a hostile reception at Toi Market in Kibra Sub-County.
Sakaja visited the market on Saturday, August 3, 2024, after a fire in the early hours destroyed property of unknown value and killed four people.
However, Sakaja was forced to flee after angry residents pelted him with stones because they were dissatisfied with his administration’s response to the fire.
Sakaja took to his official X account after his Kibra tour to say that there is nothing that will stop him from helping the victims.

He stated that seven different fires had occurred in Nairobi over the course of the previous night.
Sakaja promised to support the families of those who lost loved ones in the Toi Market fire, as well as to assist traders in rebuilding their stalls and getting back on their feet.
“Visited traders affected by fire incidents at Toi Market and later at Umoja 2. Poleni sana to all affected and condolences to the bereaved,” Sakaja stated.
“Sadly, we lost 4 souls in the Toi inferno. We will support their families during this trying time. For the traders, we will rebuild and help you get back to your feet.”
Sakaja blamed unnamed people for the incitement that resulted in his hostile reception at Toi Market.
“Thanks to the first responders and all who tried to help salvage the situation,” Sakaja stated in a statement shared via his official X account.
“We had a total of 7 fires across the city last night, and all affected will get support. For those who caused incitement, it is well, nothing will stop us from supporting our people.”
According to Toi Market chair Kenneth Jumba, the fire, which he claims was started intentionally, affected at least 2,000 traders.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna had previously called for compensation for traders at the Toi market who are counting their losses.
We had another fire at Toi Market this morning. I have spoken to area MP Peter Orero who confirms four people tragically lost their lives. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the entire Toi family. As the leadership in Nairobi we stand with you and will…

In a statement posted on his official X account, Sifuna promised that the Nairobi leadership would not only assist in the restoration of the affected businesses but would also put an end to fires in markets across the country.
