Nairobi Governor Pelted With Stones During Visit To Burned Down Toi Market

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was forced to seek refuge on Saturday after angry Kibera residents pelted him with stones.

The outspoken governor paid a visit to the Toi market, where four people were reportedly killed after a mysterious fire destroyed several stalls and houses.

In videos going around on socials, a group of enraged residents were seen pelting stones at the governor while chanting his name.

As the incident progressed, Sakaja’s security guards were forced to protect the county chief as he was led away from the scene.

Governor Sakaja was whisked away to his car and driven away. During the incident, residents accused him of running the county poorly.

During his visit to the market, Governor Sakaja promised to use county disaster funds to compensate the affected traders.

The latest incident occurred just hours after several stalls were destroyed in an early morning incident that was believed to be caused by an electrical fault.

The fire, which began around 4 a.m. on Saturday, destroyed all business structures, rendering the market inaccessible.

While providing an update on the incident, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna revealed that four people died in the tragedy.

“We had another fire at Toi Market this morning. I have spoken to area MP Peter Orero who confirms four people tragically lost their lives,” Sifuna noted.

The senator promised to help the affected families and businesses. He also reassured residents that the county government is committed to putting an end to such fires.

“As the leadership in Nairobi, we stand with you and will do our best not only to help restore your businesses but to make sure we put an end to these incessant fires in our markets,” Sifuna reiterated.
