Hillary, a Kenyan police officer deployed in Haiti, was surprised by his colleagues on Saturday with a birthday celebration.

CNN Correspondent Larry Madowo shared a video of the officers celebrating after a woman approached them with balloon-adorned birthday cards.

Hillary, who turned 30 years old, was visibly overjoyed as he received the cards.

Madowo, who was interrupted during a monologue at what appeared to be dinner time, explained that he was initially perplexed before discovering that it was a surprise birthday celebration.

“So I got interrupted by the celebration. I was not sure what was going on because it was my first time here.

“Turns out it was a birthday celebration for this Kenyan officer. Happy 30th birthday. Hillary,” Madowo stated.

Madowo also hinted that the base had documented all deployed officers’ birthdays, which would likely be celebrated.

“Everybody was celebrating him and they had birthdays for all the officers at the base which was a happy little touch.

“He wasn’t expecting it but he was happy to have it,” he added.

Kenya sent its first and second batches of police officers to Haiti in July to lead a peace mission and combat the gangs that terrorized 80% of the country.

The second batch left the country on a United Nations chartered flight in mid-July, escorted by Noor Gabow, Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service.

Later reports revealed that each officer could be earning up to Ksh279,955 per month, including allowances, making their peacekeeping efforts financially rewarding.

Shortly after landing, the troops successfully reclaimed the country’s largest hospital from armed gangs who had been holding it hostage for more than four months.
