‘Just For … Eating‘ – UDA MP Tells Off Kenyans Bashing CS Appointments
Embakasi North Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) James Gakuya has slammed a group of Kenyans who are criticizing the appointments of Cabinet Secretaries who were sworn in Thursday.
Gakuya stated on Friday, during an interview with local media that the appointed CSs must eat because their positions are salaried.
Gakuya contends that CS positions are intended for human beings, particularly Kenyans who qualify for nomination.
“You cannot expect NGOs to come and fill these positions. These positions (CS) are for human beings, and more so those Kenyan citizens who qualify to be nominated,” Gakuya stated.
“The powers to nominate lie under one appointing authority, because it is the prerogative of the president to appoint such a cabinet, but he has no mandatory power to give them a job because it is subject to that process of vetting.”
He took aim at Kenyans who have been opposing the CSs appointed by President William Ruto and later sworn in.
Gakuya says the CSs will need to eat because they cannot work for free.

“In this case, I would like to tell Kenyans who feel like the appointment of this cabinet is just for the purpose of eating, eating is a must,” Gakuya said.
“Because these are salaried positions, and you cannot expect a CS to do a free job. It is a job you earn a million or so.”
Kenyans have criticized the appointment of a number of Ruto’s CSs, claiming that they were put in positions to eat.
Kenyans were outraged when President Ruto included six former cabinet members in his first cabinet announcement.
Kenyans were outraged when the President nominated more members of his previous cabinet, as well as four members of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
Ruto’s CS appointments have been challenged in court.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has filed a court case seeking to remove all 19 Cabinet Secretaries.
In an affidavit signed by Davis Malombe in support of the petition, KHRC and Wanjiru Gikonyo claim that the vetting process failed to address integrity concerns and lacked adequate public participation, among other issues.
