DOUGLAS KANJA: Nominated Police IG Vows To Make Friendly Working Relations

Douglas Kanja, the nominee for Inspector General of the National Police Service, has promised to work closely with the National Police Service Commission (NPSC).

On Thursday, Kanja appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Administration and Internal Security and the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defense, and Foreign Relations for vetting.

The nominated IG stated that he will collaborate with the Commission as a member and agree on critical decisions.

He assured the Committee that there would be no problems with the commission moving forward.

“Being the head of the National Police Service and also being a Commissioner of the National Police Service Commission together with the DIGs and the DCI, I think we just need to table what we have before the Commission because we are members and have everything discussed and agreed.

“I don’t think we are going to have any problems on those issues going forward,” Kanja said.

He made the remarks in response to a question about whether there would be squabbles between the IG and the NPSC, as was seen with the previous office holder.

During former IG Japhet Koome’s tenure, the public witnessed fights over the promotion of senior police officers.

Koome insisted that he was the head of the police service, while the NPSC stated that it had a role in officer promotions.

Following the fights, the NPSC took the matter to court. The Labour Court halted the promotions of 514 officers.

The NPSC condemned the IG’s actions, calling them illegal and unprocedural.
