Ruto Promises New KCC Ksh1 Billion After Debt Fiasco Threatens Kenya’s Milk Plant

The government will give New Kenya Cooperative Creameries Ksh1 billion to help boost the country’s dairy farming market.

President William Ruto announced that the government will provide Ksh1 billion to help the dairy firm stabilize milk prices for farmers.

Ruto has directed New KCC to review milk prices and purchase from local farmers for Ksh53 per litre.

The President stated that the money injected would strengthen the sector and help dairy farmers increase production.

He spoke at Kobujoi Market in the Aldai Constituency after launching a Ksh300 million last-mile project and inspecting the ongoing construction of a modern market in the neighborhood.

He stated that there is a milk shortage in the country, so the government intends to help farmers produce more.

“As from September,  the farmers supplying milk to all KCC centres will be paid Ksh50 per litre and the extra Ksh3 will be remitted to cooperatives and SACCOS and also take care of transportation costs,” he said.

He stated that the state is now regulating the importation of powder milk, which is undermining local farmers’ production.

“We have had powder milk flooded in our market, but I assure farmers that this will stop. We have to support our farmers to produce more,” Ruto said.

He stated that over two million dairy farmers will benefit from the government’s economic stimulus program to help them increase production.

Ruto stated that Kenya has the potential to produce high-capacity milk and that the ongoing installation of processing infrastructure, including milk coolers, is a strategic initiative to reduce waste.

He was accompanied by CS for Energy Opiyo Wandayi, CS for Lands, Housing, Public Works, and Urban Development Alice Wahome, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, and his Siaya counterpart James Orengo, among others.
