Kenya’s Court Halts Teachers’ Strike, Ministry Releases July And August Salaries
On Tuesday, the Employment and Labour Relations Court temporarily halted the ongoing national teachers’ strike in response to a Teachers Service Commission (TSC) case.
In its decision, the industrial court scheduled the case for a hearing on September 5.
The ruling will be a reprieve to students who were stranded at a critical time when their learning was still in jeopardy with the upcoming national examinations set to be written later in the term.
This occurred despite the fact that the Treasury released Ksh 13.5 billion for teacher salaries on Tuesday, as the Kenya National Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) announced a nationwide strike that continued to halt learning.
The High Court has suspended the teachers' strike called by Kuppet pending the hearing and determination of a case filed by the Teachers Service Commission.

The Ministry stated that the funds will cover salaries for the months of July and August.
Teachers had petitioned the government for failure to honor their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), among other issues, and had abandoned their duties, which was expected to have an impact on the education sector.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos had previously expressed confidence that a solution would be found after extensive stakeholder engagement.
‘’As the Cabinet Secretary for Education in Kenya, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to all the children as they embark on their journey back to school for the third term.’’ Ogamba noted.
“May this term be filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and personal development.”
At the time of publication, the teachers’ unions had yet to comment on the latest developments.
